UAN: Status, Passbook, and PF Account Balance

UAN is Universal Account Number which was launched in 2014 by the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi along with Employees’ Provident Fund Scheme. UAN is used to link all the PF accounts and member IDs under one umbrella. UAN has come with several benefits for employees and employers. It is a 12 digit number given to every member of the Employees Provident Fund Organization and remains the same irrespective of change in the job or the employer.

This was initiated with the purpose of promoting savings for a prosperous life post-retirement or job exit. Amongst these, investment in the provident fund is the most popular choice. Provident fund is basically an investment wherein the employee and the employer contributes on the monthly basis towards the secured life of the employee after cessation of the job. Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) maintains and allot these accounts. Also, the contributions which are made in these accounts are monitored by the organization. These accounts are associated with the Universal Account Number which is also allocated by the EPFO. Members can avail all the services provided by the EPFO via online means.

This article will discuss how to check your UAN status, view your passbook, and how to check your Provident Fund account balance.


Check your UAN status:

Follow the steps mentioned below to check your UAN status online:

You should see a screen similar to the one mentioned below.


  • After you have reached the online portal, click on ‘our services’ which is the leftmost tab on the screen. Under ‘our services’, select ‘for employees’ option

  • After that, you will see an option of ‘Member UAN/Online service (OCS/OTCP)’ under ‘services’ section in the bottom left of the screen. Click on the same to continue.

  • On this page, you will see ‘Know your UAN status’ option on the bottom right panel of the screen.

  • Under ‘Know your UAN status’, enter either your member ID or PAN or Aadhaar. Rest of the fields like name, mobile number and date of birth needs to be filled mandatorily. Enter the captcha code and click on ‘Get Authorization PIN’.

  • You will receive an authorization PIN on your registered mobile number. Fill in the PIN and click on ‘Validate PIN and get UAN’.

  • Post completing the process, you will receive your UAN number along with its current status on your registered mobile number.



To view passbook, it is important that you are registered at the unified member portal. You can access your passbook after six hours of registration by using your

  • Member ID and
  • Password.

Although, some members like inoperative members, settled members, and exempted establishments members cannot avail this facility. Follow the steps mentioned below in an orderly manner to view your passbook online.

  • Select the options in the order mentioned: Our services >> For Employees

  • Fill in the details asked in this form to access your account and then you will be able to see your passbook.


Registering for e-Passbook:

You need to activate your UAN to register for an e-Passbook. You can do so by visiting the unified member portal from . Once it is registered and authenticated, you will be able to download your e-Passbook within three working days. You can download by logging in your account using your member ID and password and selecting ‘Download e-Passbook’.


PF Account Balance:

Various modes are available to the members through which they can check their account balance. The modes are EPFO Portal, SMS, Missed Call, and UMANG app.

EPFO Portal:

  • Follow these steps: Our services >> For Employees >> Member Passbook

You will see a screen similar to this on your computer screens

  • Login the account using your credentials and then you will be able to check the account balance


  • To check the account balance, send an SMS from your registered mobile number in the format mentioned below to 7738299899. The prescribed format is: EPFOHO UAN ENG
  • ‘ENG’ which stands for ‘English’ is your preferred language. If not English, you can choose amongst ten other languages which are: English, Hindi, Telugu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, and Bengali
  • You might not receive an update if your account hasn’t been verified by your employer. In such a case, you need to contact your employer and explain the case.
  • In case your message has been approved, you will receive an SMS containing balance in your account, your KYC details along with the details of the last contribution made.

Missed Call:

To avail this facility, make sure that the KYC details have been verified and linked to your UAN account. When the KYC is successfully linked, you can give a missed call from your registered mobile number on 011-22901406. You will receive an SMS containing your account balance.


UMANG stands for Unified Mobile App for New Governance. EPFO has access to this app and you need to follow the steps mentioned below to check your account balance via this app.

  • You need to download the app on your phone
  • After downloading, select the ‘EPFO’ option from the app
  • From that, click on ‘Employee Centric Service’
  • Post that, enter the UAN number
  • You will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number
  • Enter that OTP wherever asked and select ‘View Passbook’ option


Common FAQ’s:

How is PF contribution calculated?

Both employer and employee contribute 12% of the Employee’s salary to the Provident Fund. The complete contribution from the employee is added to the fund whereas the employer’s contribution amounting to 3.67% of the wages goes towards the Provident Fund and the remaining towards pension funds.

What is the minimum amount required for EPF deductions?

An organization which has employees who have a salary below Rs.15,000 per month has to compulsorily contribute to the Employees’ Provident Fund scheme at minimum 10% rate in case of employees are upto 20 in number and 12% if the higher number of employees have been employed.

Is EPF contribution mandatory for people earning more than Rs.15,000 per month?

No, EPF contributions are not mandatory for people earning more than Rs. 15,000 per month. Although, they can contribute voluntarily.

What is the role of Form 15G in Provident Fund?

Form 15G is filled and submitted to the bank or any other financial institution to prevent them from deducting TDS on the interest if the taxable income is less than Rs. 2.5 lakhs. This form can only be filed by people below the age of 60 or the HUF. For senior citizens Form 15H is applicable.

When can full PF be withdrawn?

Full Provident Fund amount can only be withdrawn after attaining retirement. According to the current rule, you can withdraw 90% of your PF account fund either at/after turning 54 years or anytime in a year preceding the actual retirement. Whichever option comes later will be applicable.

Can PF be withdrawn while the employee is still working?

Provident Fund account is an accumulation of the contributions made by the employee and the employer. You can withdraw funds from the ‘employee’s contribution’ to the PF account. The funds withdrawn should be less than 50% of the employee’s share in the EPF account and this facility can be availed thrice during the employment period.

How long does it take to withdraw the amount from the Provident Fund account?

Generally, it takes about 20 days for your withdrawal claim to be processed. In these 20 days, your claim will be forwarded to the EPFO and the amount will be credited to your bank account.

How much PF amount can be withdrawn?

According to the latest amendments, 90% of the amount accumulated in the PF account can be withdrawn at/after the age of 54 years. However, if the person has left the job and is unemployed for a month, then he/she can withdraw 75% of the PF. And if he remains unemployed for the second month also, then the remaining 25% of the amount can also be withdrawn.
