Here’s why your Employer has not issued Form 16 Yet!
(Last Updated On: June 9, 2017) Where is my Form 16?
When will you give me my Form 16, Mr. employer?
Sir, I have to file my income tax returns peacefully. Give me my Form 16, NOW! Please.
It is 7th June already and you still can’t muster up the courage to ask your employer all these questions?
If you are a salaried employee, every year, you get the details of the TDS deducted from your salary income, from your employer, in Form 16 up to 31st May. It is not because your employer is too nice, and that you couldn’t have asked for a better boss. But because the due date to issue Form16 as per the income tax rules given by the Income Tax Department is 31st May for every financial year.
Also, It is mandatory for all the employers who have deducted tax at source to issue form16. This certificate, used while filing your ITR, can be issued only after the employers have deposited the tax deducted from your salary along with reporting other details of tax deduction to the Income Tax Department.
So what changed this year and Why haven’t you received your Form 16 yet?No, your boss has not suddenly turned evil, the Government of India has extended the date of issuance of Form16 to a salaried employee, from 31st May to 15th June.
If your employer, even after the extension of due date to issue Form16, fails to issue it, the government has made penalty provisions to keep these practices in check.
This is not just an extension but a permanent change of date. The revised due date to issue Form16 is not a temporary extension. The due date has been changed by the CBDT and will now be applicable from Financial Year 2016-17 (Assessment Year 2017-18) onwards. As a result of this, Form16 can be now issued by your employer until 15th June, following the financial year in which the TDS has been deducted from your salary.
So, If you have not received your Form16 for tax deducted at source till now. Don’t worry, your employers are legally allowed to issue the same till 15th June 2017 for Financial Year 2016-17. (Assessment Year 2017-18).
